Halloween Disc-A-Day: Day 22 Kaw

This project is an attempt to help me get dvds that for one reason or another I’ve never seen off of my shelf and give them a watch.  Today’s pick is Kaw.

IMDb: Kaw (Video 7 April 2007)
A small town is attack by ravens and doesn’t know why the ravens are working together.

Kaw is The Birds with worse special effects and a stated reason, but I will get to that in a minute.  The cast is good.  Stephen McHattie has a nice beefy role.  It’s good to see him in anything.  Watch Pontypool if you aren’t familiar with him.  Sean Patrick Flanery from Boondock Saints does a decent job.  He is like Aaron Paul but 15 years too early.  The sheriff in a horror movie is a part that seems like a free pass.  The main weak points are the Mennonites.  Their accents are as phony as the beards glued to their faces.  The effects vary wildly.  There is a lot of footage of perched birds on green screen.  It gives them a feeling of being slightly off and was hard to spot exactly what they were doing at first.  The CGI birds are midlevel.  The things themselves look alright, but the lighting always keeps them from blending into the scene.  As far as the story goes, it’s all very basic.

Check out the Motion Picture Meltdown episode about Kaw from before I was on the show.
