Halloween Disc-A-Day: Day 27 Minotaur

This project is an attempt to help me get dvds that for one reason or another I’ve never seen off of my shelf and give them a watch.  Today’s pick is Minotaur.

IMDb: Minotaur (11 May 2006)
Long ago in the Iron Age a shadow loomed over a lonely village. For generations the village youths are stolen from their families and delivered as sacrifice to a mythical beast – the Minotaur, that dwells beneath a great palace.

While it’s more action and fantasy than horror, there’s no denying this is a monster movie. It was a breath of fresh air to get some variety though. This stars a baby version of Tom Hardy as our hero, Theo, along with Tony Todd who is in the role of the non-monster villain and a small cameo for Rutger Hauer. The movie is far from perfect, but I thought it was pretty good. The larger flaws lay with some weak effets work and overall cinematography that is kind of flat. The minotaur itself looks like it was designed by someone who hasn’t heard of it. It’s like a zombified bull with no clear human half. Those complaints aside, there is a lot of potential in these horror stories set in the distant past like Black Death and The 13th Warrior and it’s a vein of material that hasn’t been mined for everything it’s worth already. I would recommend it for viewer who can overlook the effects.
