Continuing from last year, this project is an attempt to help me get dvds that for one reason or another I’ve never seen off of my shelf and give them a watch. Oh man, I just watched Mr. Jingles.
IMDb: Mr. Jingles (Video 18 July 2006)
An innocent man imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit emerges from prison bent on exacting revenge on his accusers.
This is listed as a horror comedy on IMDb. Too often on that site especially, that’s attached to horror movies that clearly had no intentions of ever being funny. They are usually straight-faced horror that for one reason or another comes across as goofy to a general audience. I was ready to believe that was exactly what was happening here until someone had a severed dick thrown in their face. That tipped me off that comedy was one of the goals of the movie. Just the tip though, because for me it never really crossed the line into actual being funny. This is an hour twenty and feels so much longer. The main thought coming out of the film was wondering if the actor who played Mr. Jingles, Dr. Rudy Hatfield, is a real-life doctor. I did some searching to no avail, but did find out that he’s the director’s dad. Retrospectively, that adds a bit of charm to the whole thing. Imaging making your own dad dress up in a terrible clown costume so he can be in your own dumb movie. That’s a good dad in this bad movie.
I’ve only got one dvd on deck before I have to go restock. Come back and find out what it is tomorrow. In the meantime, listen to the Motion Picture Meltdown episode on Silent Night, Deadly Night because I’m running out of slashers to cross-reference.
