Continuing from last year, this project is an attempt to help me get dvds that for one reason or another I’ve never seen off of my shelf and give them a watch. From my new batch of used dvds, I’ve got Lake Dead.
IMDb: Lake Dead (11 Jul 2007)
Three sisters and a group of their friends take a trip to the home of the recently deceased grandfather — who died a particularly grisly death — to learn more about the promise of an inheritance, only to encounter a family of psychos who have taken up residence in the old man’s cabin.
To replenish my stocks enough to get through this month, I had to run out to the nearest dirt mall and do some shopping. This movie comes from an After Dark Horrorfest collections of 8 Films To Die For even though this particular package only has four. A lot of familiar ground is covered in this one. That’s a double entendre, because it takes from multiple horror tropes and incest. The main trope here is that there are what amount to redneck mutants made popular by films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes. The major difference here is they have lake property in California. These are mutants by way of inbreeding not the good post-apocalyptic kind like you want. There’s some camping and you know the routine. I thought they were going to have an ongoing thing of putting bodies in the lake, but they didn’t really come back to it. They had close calls which they were not aware of and never found the body in the film. It seems like a missed opportunity. Despite the cover, the movie has very little to do with the physical lake. Instead Lake is the last name of… spoiler alert… all the main characters. There wasn’t anything I would consider to be a surprise in this, but it does accomplish what it is trying to do.
I’ll be watching two more from this bundle. Check back in. In the meantime, listen to this old episode of Motion Picture Meltdown on Motel Hell.
