Halloween Disc-A-Day: Day 11 – Open Water

For a third year, I’m going to be watching at least one horror DVD per day and writing a short review about them. I’ve acquired a new batch that I haven’t previously seen, so without any further delay. Let’s get to work.

Open Water (20 August 2004)

Based on the true story of two scuba divers accidentally stranded in shark infested waters after their tour boat has left.

Overall I’m have a very positive opinion on this one.  It’s a horrifying situation to imagine yourself in and the low quality film used makes it feel like you’re really seeing it.  I don’t particularly like the way it looks (or the couple for that matter), but it’s effective.  If you don’t want anything close to a spoiler, come back tomorrow.  Now, I’ll continue.  The thing that throws me about this movie is the statement “based on true events.”  The basic situation happened except with professional divers and a much nicer outcome.  It annoys me slightly when they lean into that part of the marketing in a somewhat deceptive way like The Entity or Wolf Creek.

If you’re interested in more shark action, listen to the Motion Picture Meltdown episode on Shark Exorcist and The Shallows and I will be back with another of these tomorrow.
